Mum’s the Word, we hope not!
CAI and ALSG (The Advanced Life Support Group) are launching a new appeal to mark Mother’s Day and International Women’s Day 2008
The appeal highlights the need to improve the healthcare given to women during childbirth. It is estimated that 1 in 26 women die during childbirth in Africa, an astonishing figure when compared to Ireland where the rate is 1 in 48,000.
With emergency maternal healthcare projects already in Pakistan and The Gambia, CAI and ALSG, are launching this appeal to raise awareness of this overlooked issue. As one of the leading causes of death among women of reproductive age in poorly resourced countries the issue must be forcefully tackled - these deaths could be so easily avoided.
As part of the appeal we’re calling for a consortium of committed female donors to join forces to fund such projects. CAI and ALSG have already achieved a great deal in the Brikama district of The Gambia where appropriate training, hospital ward renovation and advocacy work has started to improve the healthcare women receive during childbirth (in hospital and in the community). The project is seen as a sustainable solution - those who have been trained can then become the trainers themselves. Please click here for details on this programme.
