Mother and childSri Lanka (Tsunami) Appeal

Press Release

Thank you for supporting our Tsunami Appeal - You have helped us achieve so much

With the money that was donated to us we have already achieved the following in Sri Lanka:

  • Sent out medical aid workers

  • Trained local healthcare staff

  • Delivered vital drugs and supplies

  • Provided essential equipment

Meggie Szczesny, CAI’s Programme Director, witnessed the devastation of the tsunami first-hand whilst delivering supplies to affected areas in Sri Lanka. Meggie was accompanied by Dr Susan Mann, Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist, who delivered training to local healthcare staff.

CAI sent Children’s Nurse Paula Blurton to Batticaloa Hospital for two months in April 2005 to provide further training to the nursing staff. We also sent a Paediatric doctor in June 2005 for 3 months to do clinical work and deliver further training. In October 2005, CAI sent a consultant paediatrician to Killinochchi for 3 months.

BabyWe have put plans in place to establish an Emergency Maternal and Child Health training programme to provide local medical and nursing staff with the skills needed to deliver life-saving treatment. We have linked with The Sri Lanka College of Paediatrics in Colombo, the capital city, and have assisted them with 3 projects.

The first is a project that supports children orphaned by the tsunami. Orphans are placed with a carer within their own community. We asked for supporters to pledge £16 per month, until the child reaches 18 years, to help with their upbringing.

The second project was to establish ‘Drop In Centres’ for children in the tsunami-affected regions. These centres will deliver a service in preventative, curative and promotive aspects of health, offer assistance, counselling and social support.

The first centre has opened, on the coast south of Galle, a part of the country especially badly hit in the Tsunami.

The third project is to help promote and sell a book called “Helping the Child Survivor – post tsunami” written by Professor Manouri Senanayake, the President of the Sri Lanka College of Paediatrics. The proceeds will go to help the children and CAI is taking orders for copies. Read more about this book here.
